Tsavorite garnet is a natural variety of garnet belonging to the silicate group, and more precisely to the grossular family. It stands out for its brilliant green colour, ranging from vivid green to intense emerald green, due to the presence of vanadium and sometimes chromium.
Its chemical formula is Ca3Al2(SiO4)3, typical of grossular garnets. Its cubic crystal structure gives it a hardness of between 7 and 7.5 on the Mohs scale, as well as excellent resistance to wear.
Prized for its high brilliance, its often remarkable transparency and its vivid colour, tsavorite garnet is a sought-after stone in fine jewellery.
